Call for Abstracts: The Psychology of Sonic the Hedgehog


We are thrilled to announce a call for abstracts for an upcoming book that dives into the psychological themes embedded in the world of Sonic the Hedgehog. As more than just a speedster, Sonic embodies freedom, independence, and an indomitable spirit. This book aims to explore the rich psychological dimensions of Sonic’s personality, his relationships, and the challenges faced by his friends and foes. By bridging the worlds of psychology and gaming culture, this collection seeks to provide fresh perspectives on one of the most iconic characters in video game history.


Book Synopsis:


Sonic the Hedgehog is not only a symbol of speed but also a representation of perseverance, motivation, and the enduring power of friendship. This book will analyze Sonic’s unique personality traits, his dynamic with allies like Tails and Knuckles, and his antagonistic relationship with Dr. Eggman. It will also dig into deeper topics, such as the obsessive tendencies of Eggman, the struggles of Sonic’s companions, and the broader psychological themes of persistence and overcoming adversity.

Topics for Submission:
We invite chapter proposals that explore the following (or related) topics:

  1. Sonic as a Symbol of Freedom: Examining Sonic’s independence and his drive to remain unbound by societal constraints.

  2. The Psychology of Speed and Motivation: Analyzing Sonic’s need for speed as a metaphor for perseverance and the pursuit of happiness.

  3. Friendship and Support Systems: Exploring the dynamics between Sonic and his allies, such as Tails’ loyalty and Knuckles’ journey of trust.

  4. Eggman’s Obsession: A psychological deep dive into Dr. Eggman’s relentless pursuit of control and his fixation on defeating Sonic.

  5. Overcoming Adversity: Investigating how Sonic and his friends confront challenges and maintain resilience in the face of conflict.

  6. The Role of Humor and Optimism: Exploring Sonic’s witty personality and how positivity can influence perseverance and morale.

  7. Tails’ Journey of Self-Confidence: Understanding Tails’ transformation from a sidekick to a capable hero in his own right.

  8. Knuckles’ Inner Struggles: Examining Knuckles’ role as a guardian and his psychological challenges with trust and isolation.

  9. The Sonic-Eggman Rivalry: Understanding the dynamics of rivalry and its psychological impacts on both hero and villain.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Abstracts should be between 250–300 words and clearly indicate the topic(s) being addressed.

  • Include a brief biography (100 words max) detailing your expertise or interest in the subject.

  • Submissions must be original and not under consideration elsewhere or created using Ai.

  • Deadline for Abstract Submission: 2/28/2025
