Making New Traditions For Bringing in the New Year

Happy New Year to our Geeking Out community! Can you believe it is already the end of the year? So much has changed within our community and our families. We have seen new conventions, new babies, new staff members, growth in all of our programs, and a constant desire from the world to better understand this idea of geek cultural and how it can be used in therapeutic spaces!

As we round out our winter break series on engaging with our geeky/nerdy kiddos, we want to thank you for being part of our family! Without the Geek Therapeutics alumni, community partners, and staff we couldn’t be where we are today. Thank you for such an amazing year !

Finishing out this weekend of winter break can either be rushed or slowed down depending on how you prepare fear and we wanted to give you a few new activities to do withHappy New Year!

As you and your kids get ready for the big night, there are plenty of exciting activities to engage them in to make the most of the occasion and mark the end of 2022.

First and one of our favorites, why not have a movie marathon? With the newest releases on Disney+, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Netflix, there is something for everyone and 2 days left to cram as many movies or shows in before the year flips to 2023. Pop popcorn and build a pillow fort watch your films – with the volume turned up!

If you and your family are like mine, then you might have a love for creating vision boards for what you would like the next year to look like. This can double as a craft night with a purpose! Grab some construction paper for the boards and use magazines, newspapers, printables from the internet, and anything else you can find around the house that can help bring each of your visions together for what 2023 would look like for you. Whip up some traditional New Year’s Eve food and enjoy this arts and crafts event with intention as your family begins to talk about their desires from the new year. After the clock strikes midnight (if you can stay up that long), have each creator share what their vision board means to them and as a family commit to helping each member see their vision board to life over the coming 12 months! Have everyone put their vision board somewhere they can see it daily! Positive intentions go a long way!

Finally, don’t forget the classic board games and have an all out gaming extravaganza to ring in the new year. Snag some of the classics or check out the geeky versions of Monopoly and Clue, or if your family is really into gaming check out one of the newest versions of Catan and see who can settle the land the fastest!

Whatever your family chooses to do for the end of the year, remember that geekdom is a generational experience and can be explored in many different ways. From The Jetsons to Demon Slayer and Frozen to The Swiss Family Robinson and all the way into the multiverse of video games, engaging with what your family loves and doing it together is the greatest way to end the year while welcoming the next!

Don’t forget to check out your local game shop for end of the year bargains and the 2023 events calendar!
