Is There Therapeutic Value in Binge Watching?

If you’re anything like me, you’ve spent the past few weeks binge-watching your favorite shows and movies. Whether it’s a classic sitcom or a brand new drama, there’s something undeniably calming and therapeutic about binge-watching. But why is that?

First of all, binge-watching allows us to move away from the stress and anxieties of our everyday lives and immerse ourselves in the world of our favorite characters and stories. We can laugh, cry, and feel all of the emotions that come with watching a captivating show in the safety and comfort of our own spaces.

Another benefit of binge-watching is the sense of accomplishment that comes with finishing a series or a film. I know that when I finished Wednesday over the winter break, I was excited that I made it through the series without a single spoiler!  It’s incredibly satisfying to finish something that you’ve invested time and energy into, and it can be a great way to reward yourself for a job well done. I know I rewarded myself with a deep dive into the easter eggs that connected Wednesday to the 1960’s and 1990’s adaptations of the Addam’s Family! It’s beyond satisfying knowing that the series is completed and I’m up to date and not missing out!

Finally, binge-watching can also be a great way to bond with friends and family. Watching a show together is a great way to connect with those you care about and share a special moment together. Whether you’re cheering for the good guys or rooting for the bad ones, it’s always fun to watch a show with someone you love. I really enjoy this part of binge watching the series with friends and hearing their thoughts on character development, set creation, and costuming! Oh my gosh, the costumes on Wednesday were so much fun!

Overall, binge-watching can be an incredibly therapeutic experience. It can help us relax, reward us for a job well done, and bring us closer to the people we care about. So if you’re feeling overwhelmed and need some time to unwind, why not give it a try? You might be surprised at just how much better you feel after a few hours of binge-watching.
